US stocks rise yesterday as investors bought stocks likely to do well in recovery

US stocks rose yesterday as investors bought stocks likely to do well in the recovery. Labor Department data showing decline in number of Americans claimed unemployment also boosted sentiment.     The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 0.6 per cent, the S&P 500 climbed half a per cent and the Nasdaq Composite index added 0.1 per cent.
