T20 World Cup: India defeats defending champion England by 90 runs

Team India showcased a brilliant all round performace as it defeated defending champions England by 90 runs in a Group-A match of the ICC Twenty-20 World Cup cricket tournament at Colombo in Sri Lanka last night. After opting to bat first, India compiled a formidable 170 for 4 in the allotted 20 overs. Middle order batsman Rohit Sharma scored a superb 55 not out, helping India reach a competitive total of 170. Gautam Gambhir with 45 and Virat Kohli with 40 were the other valuable contributors. Needing 171 to win, England were bundled out for 80, their lowest T-20 score.Off Spinner Harbhajan Singh, who was playing an international match after a gap of one year, was the pick of the bowlers. He bagged 4 wickets, conceding just 12 runs from his 4 overs. Piyush Chawla and Irfan Pathan also took two wickets each. Harbhajan was adjudged man of the match.Earlier, in another match, Pakistan defeated New Zealand by 13 runs at Pallekele. Today, Ireland will take on the West Indies in a Group-B match at Colombo. The match will be played at 7 :30 PM (IST).
