Agency reports quoting witnesses and activists from Syria say that security forces detained large number of people in raids in Daraa and other areas. The crackdown has intensified since Friday, when reports of killings emerged which was denied by Syria. Security forces also conducted raids in the Damascus suburb of Douma and the northern coastal town of Jableh. Syria’s official news agency Sana however quoting an official army source says that Armed Forces have intervened and put an end to the operations of killings, vandalism, by extremist terrorist groups in response to the calls for help from the citizens of Daraa to restore tranquillity, security and normal life to the citizens.European leaders have escalated their criticism of the Syrian crackdown, with the French President calling the current situation unacceptable and Britain's foreign minister raising the possibility of sanctions. Even the Arab League said that those in the region demanding freedom and democracy require support and not shooting with bullets.Meanwhile Syria's U.N. envoy has said that Syria is perfectly capable of conducting its own transparent inquiry into the deaths of anti-government demonstrators and needs no outside assistance. Bashar Ja'afari told reporters who was asked about a call by U.N. Chief Ban Ki-moon for an investigation that Syria can undertake any investigation by our own selves with full transparency as it has nothing to hide.Britain, France, Germany and Portugal have circulated a draft statement to other 11 council members condemning Syria's violent crackdown against protesters and urging restraint by the government.The U.N. Secretary General has called for an independent inquiry into the deaths of people he has described as peaceful demonstrators. U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice reiterated that Washington was considering the possibility of targeted U.S. sanctions against Damascus in response to the violence against protesters and she repeated an allegation that Syria was seeking Iran's assistance.
