Syrian President Assad offers amnesty to rebels if they surrender Aleppo

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has offered amnesty to the rebels holed up in Aleppo and said they can leave with their families if they lay down their arms. The offer follows two weeks of the heaviest bombardment of the five-and-a-half-year civil war, which has killed hundreds of people trapped inside Aleppo's rebel-held eastern sector.

Speaking to Danish television, Assad said he would continue the fight with the rebels until they leave Aleppo. However, rebels said they had no plan to evacuate Aleppo and denounced the amnesty offer as a deception. More than 250,000 people are believed to be trapped inside rebel-held eastern Aleppo, facing dire shortages of food and medicine.

Meanwhile,UN's envoy says,Staffan de Mistura said the rebel-held parts of Aleppo city may face total destruction in two months, with thousands killed. He appealed to Russia and Syrian Government not to destroy the city for the sake of eliminating militants. US and Russia are both fighting against Islamic State in Syria, but are on opposite sides in the wider civil war, with Moscow fighting to protect Assad and Washington supporting rebels against him. The UN Security Council will hold a meeting today to discuss the proposal of its Special Envoy for Syria on the withdrawal of the militants of the terrorist organization Jabhat al-Nusra from Aleppo.
