Syrian parliament authorises PM to hold talks with Israel

The Israeli parliament, Knesset has voted to advance an amendment that would require a referendum on any withdrawal from sovereign Israeli territory, such as the Golan Heights. The vote comes in the wake of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's announcement that Syria is now willing to negotiate peace with Israel without any preconditions.Sixty-eight Knesset members voted in favor of the motion, 22 opposed and one MK abstained in the voting, took place last evening. Existing law technically demands a referendum on any withdrawal from territory under Israeli sovereignty. The government-backed bill, which still needs to pass a second and third reading before becoming law, is seen as a boost to those opposing Israel's withdrawal from the occupied Golan Heights under a future peace deal with Syria.
