More than 300 opposition figures in Syria are meeting in Damascus in an effort to unite anti-government forces. The meeting has not been sanctioned by Syria's authorities but so far they have not intervened. Both older members of the opposition, many of whom spent years in prison and representatives of the younger protestors who started the uprising six months ago, are taking part. Two days ago, opposition parties in exile formed the Syrian National Council.
