In Syria, the Government forces have launched their offensive to reclaim the southern and western suburbs of Aleppo where the rebel are reported to have managed a strong foothold. The Rebel Free Syrian Army claimed that tanks have rolled into the district of Salah al deen. Thousands of government troops have massed around the city over the last 48 hours. Intermittent firing and shelling has been reported in the rebel held pockets by the Syrian troops.
The rebels claimed that helicopter gunships were used for firing in the city. Civilians caught up in the firing have fled to the northern parts of the city. The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 10 Syrian soldiers and 6 rebel fighters were killed in the fighting in Aleppo.The Syrian Official news agency SANA reported fighting in Furqan district where a terrorist group was terrorizing residents. It said two terrorists had been killed and three others were detained, and their arms and vehicles had been seized.
The International Red Crescent has suspended its operations in Aleppo because of the escalating violence. The Free Syrian Army and other militia groups have been digging themselves in preparation for the fight against the Syrian troops. Aleppo is vital for the Syrian regime being the commercial hub of the country and was until recently a bedrock of support for President Assad. According to the UN estimates, more than 120,000 people have now fled the fighting to neighbouring countries and the figure is expected to rise.
The violence in Syria has spilled over into Lebanon. At least 12 people were wounded in shootings in Tripoli late Friday night as neighbours clashed over the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. The gunmen used automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades in the attacks. The Lebanese forces have tightened security in the area.
