Iran on Saturday said that the Syrian government should recognise the legitimate demands of its people. Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi at the same time cautioned against any attempts to topple the Syrian government. He said that a vacuum in the Syrian regime would have an unpredictable impact on the region.The statement is significant as the US, the European Union and Syrian opposition groups have accused Tehran of helping Syrian security forces clamp down on protestors.Salehi's comments came two days after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called for dialogue between Damascus and the opposition to end months of deadly violence.Iran has accused Israel and the United States of trying to undermine Syria.The protests in Syria, which began in mid-March, has left more than 2,200 people dead, according to the United Nations.
