Syria conflict: Attack on aid convoy near Aleppo as military declares truce over

In Syria, a convoy of aid trucks has been hit by an air strike near the Syrian city of Aleppo hours after the military declared the current cessation of violence is over.

A UN spokesman said at least 18 of 31 trucks have been hit but could not confirm it was by an air strike. UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, described the incident as outrageous. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 32 people were killed in dozens of air strikes launched in and around Aleppo after the truce officially came to an end.

Syria's military yesterday declared that the seven-day, US-Russian brokered ceasefire is over as the government and opposition traded accusations over mounting violations.

An AFP news agency correspondent in Aleppo reported the northern city is being bombed. Russian military said rebels launched a major attack on a government position on Aleppo's southwestern outskirts, forcing Syrian troops to respond.

Earlier yesterday, US officials said envoys from the 19-nation International Syria Support Group will hold an emergency session today at UN headquarters to assess conditions on the ground in the war-ravaged country.
