In Syria, reports quoting eyewitnesses say that at least 72 people have been killed when forces opened fire to disperse demonstrators in different parts of country. Agency reports quoting London-based Syrian Human Rights Committee have said that 72 people were killed and hundreds others wounded when Syrian security forces opened fire in several towns and regions. Syrian official news agency Sana, however, quoting its correspondent said that 10 people were killed, including the police. Country's Interior Ministry has called upon citizens to obtain a licence before holding demonstrations from the competent authorities. The demonstrations took place a day after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad scrapped decades of emergency rule. He also issued legislative decree abolishing the Supreme State Security Court and regulating the right to peaceful protests. However, the agitating leaders have already announced that lifting the state of emergency would not be enough and have demanded an end to the Baath party's stranglehold on Syrian politics.
