Syed Modi Int'l Badminton: Saina retires hurt; several Indian shuttlers advance to PQFs

India's ace shuttler and London Olympics Bronze medalist Saina Nehwal has made a shock exit from the KL Garg-Syed Modi International India Grand Prix Gold Badminton Championship in Lucknow. Saina, who was given a top billing in the tournament, was leading her Women's Singles opening round match against Ksenia Polikarpova of Russia 17-21, 18-20 yesterday, when her knee problem recurred and she had to retire from the match.Second seeded PV Sindhu, however, made it to the Women's Singles pre-quarterfinals by defeating Li Lian Yang of Malaysia, 21-6, 21-12. Sayali Gokhale and 2 other Indian players have also advanced to the Women's Singles pre-quarterfinals.In the Men's Singles, top seeded Indonesian Taufik Hidayat crashed out of the tournament after losing to India's unseeded Pratul Joshi 17-21, 12-21 in the opening round. P. Kashyap, Ajay Jayaram and Gurusaidutt are among the six Indian shuttlers who have booked a Men's Singles pre-quarterfinal berth.
