In Switzerland, people voting in referendum have rejected a proposal to introduce a strict timetable for phasing out nuclear power. <br/><br/>A majority of cantons (Swiss states) voted against the plan in the referendum. The proposal promoted by the Green party would have resulted in closing three of Switzerland's five nuclear plants next year, with the last closing in 2029. The five plants presently generate 40% of Switzerland's electricity.
