Swami Atmasthanandaji, the president of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission passed away this evening at Ramakrishna Seva Sadan hospital in Kolkata. He was 99.<br/><br/>Swamiji has been in Ramakrishna Seva Sadan hospital for past two years since February, 2015. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled the death of Swami Atmasthanandaji. Earlier, Ms Banerjee visited the hospital and inquired about the health of Swamiji, who has been on ventilation support since Saturday.<br/><br/>Swami Atmasthanandaji, was born in 1919 at Sabajpur, near Dhaka. He received mantra diksha, spiritual initiation, from Swami Vijnananandaji, a monastic disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, in 1938 and joined the Ramakrishna Order at Belur Math on January 3, 1941 at the age of 22 years. <br/><br/>In 1945, Swami Virajanandaji, the then president of the Order, gave him Brahmacharya vows, and in 1949 Sannyasa vows and the name Atmasthananda. Swamiji was also appointed Secretary of the relief operations of the Math and Mission.<br/><br/>Under his stewardship, the Math and Mission conducted massive relief and rehabilitation operations in various parts of India, Nepal and Bangladesh. Swami Atmasthanandaji was elected president of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission on December 3, 2007. He was the 15th President of the Order.<br/><br/>Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief on the demise of Swami Atmasthananda. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, the demise of Swami Atmasthananda ji is a personal loss for him. The Prime Minister said, he lived with Swami Atmasthananda during a very important period of his life. He said, Swami Atmasthananda was blessed with immense knowledge and wisdom and generations will remember his exemplary personality. Mr Modi said, whenever he would visit Kolkata, he would always make it a point to seek the blessings of Swami Atmasthananda.The Prime Minister said, as President of Ramakrishna Mission set up by Swami Vivekananda, Swami Atmasthananda worked tirelessly and spread its influence globally.<br/><br/>
