Swachh Bharat Mission: Over six crore toilets built across rural India

Over six crore toilets have been built across rural India under Swachh Bharat Mission so far. Briefing reporters in New Delhi, Secretary, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Parameswaran Iyer today said, 15 States and union territories are expected to be declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) by March this year. <br/><br/>He said, over 3 lakh villages and 300 districts have been declared ODF across ten States and Union Territories. Mr Iyer said, UNICEF estimates that the lack of sanitation is responsible for the deaths of over one lakh children in India annually. <br/><br/>He also said that the Ministry will soon launch a mass media campaign to promote the twin pit toilet . A twin pit toilet is a toilet model that is economical, safe, easy to clean, eco-friendly, and is effectively a self-contained waste treatment plant that does not harm the ground water beneath the toilet.
