SW Railways introduces biodiesel for trains

The South Western Railways with headquarters in Hubli in Karnataka has introduced biodiesel for trains, operating under its zone.

As present five percent biodiesel is blended with High Speed Diesel.

This will gradually be increased to ten percent.

It has set up Biodiesel filling centres at Hubli, Bengaluru and Hospet. It said that two more such units will be started in Arsikere and Krishnarajpuram.

In one year all the 13 railway depots within the zone will have their own filling units.

Biodiesel is a green fuel that provides cleaner alternatives for diesel locomotives.

Union Government is promoting use of biodiesel in Railways, as this will not only provide employment opportunities in rural areas, but also ensure energy security, cleaner air and savings in foreign exchange.

It will also reduce our dependency on fossil fuel.
