Sustaining high rate of economic expansion a challenge: Pranab

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said the challenge before the country is to sustain high rate of economic expansion and cross the double-digit growth barrier. He called for encouraging stronger disclosure standards for important financial institutions and advocated for stricter disclosure guidelines. Addressing a conference on sustained economic growth in New Delhi this evening Mr. Mukherjee said, government will continue to address weakness in the system and institutions at different levels of governance. He added there is need to make the financial sector more competitive by enhancing efficiency and transparency .The statement assumes significance in the wake of 300 crore rupee Citibank fraud at Gurgaon branch.Talking about the Direct Taxes Code (DTC), the Minister said, it will make the tax legislation progressive in line with the global norms and best practices. The Finance Minister added that Centre is trying to work out a consensus with the states on implementation of the Goods and Services Tax, GST which requires amendments to the constitution. Finance Minister asserted that the economic recovery witnessed in the recent times, is broad based, with agriculture, industry and services contributing to its momentum. He reiterated government's resolve to strengthen rural infrastructure for inclusive growth.
