Sushma Swaraj meetsTamil Nadu fishermen delegation

A delegation of Tamil Nadu fishermen called on External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in New Delhi today. They apprised Ms Swaraj of the difficulties faced by them in attending to their livelihood through fishing in waters between India and Sri Lanka, with specific reference to the unfortunate killing of an Indian fisherman early this month.<br/><br/>The delegation was accompanied by Minister of State Road Transport and Highways Pon Radhakrishnan and Members of Parliament, L Ganesan and Anwar Raajha.<br/><br/>According to sources, Ms. Swaraj conveyed that the government's efforts in the last two years had earlier led to release of all boats and fishermen in Sri Lankan custody. She assured that government will remain closely engaged with island nation to secure release of all Indian boats and fishermen currently in Sri Lankan custody.<br/><br/>The External Affairs Minister pointed out that Sri Lankan government is conducting a thorough investigation in the killing of the India fishermen. She also reiterated government's commitment for early implementation of the 1500 crore rupees package to develop deep sea fishing capacities for fishermen in Tamil Nadu and informed that initial financial allotment in this regard had been made.
