External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today met Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena in Colombo and discussed bilateral issues. Foreign Secretary Dr. S. Jaishankar along with a delegation of other senior officials were present in the meeting. The minister, on a two -day official visit to Sri Lanka to participate in the second Indian Ocean Conference-IOC 2017, also met her Sri Lankan counterpart Tilak Marapana before leaving back home.<br/><br/>In her address at the conference last evening, Swaraj called for a peaceful, stable and secure Indian Ocean with its waters free of any traditional and non-traditional threats. She said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's concept of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) is a clear, high-level articulation of India's vision for the Indian Ocean. <br/><br/>The external affairs minister said the principles enshrined in SAGAR provide for a coherent framework to address some of the challenges relating to economic revival, connectivity, security, culture and identity, and India's own evolving approach to these issues.<br/><br/>Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar in his keynote address underlined that India is guided by security and development requirements of its small neighbours rather than narrow vision or reciprocity. The conference is being organised by India Foundation with its partner S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Singapore. More than 200 delegates from around 25 countries are participating in the conference. The first IOR conference was held in Singapore last year.
