In Assam, over 37 lakh job card holders were benefited under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) during last three years. Of these, around 10 lakh beneficiaries belonged to scheduled caste and scheduled tribes. Among the job card holders, two lakh were provided with assured 100 days employment. This was stated in the latest Economic Survey report published by the Assam Government. According to the Economic Survey report, more than two crore three lakh person-days were generated by women under the Mahatma Gandhi NERAGA during the period. The Act is under implementation in all the 27 districts of the State. The report said, over 19 crore rupees financial grants were provided as marginal money to create self-employment avenues to 2,440 youths under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme during 2010-11. Vocational trainings were provided to around six hundred educated youths to establish self-ventures under Chief Minister’s Self-Employment and Vocational Training programme during this period. The Assam Government has also initiated a number of programmes for self and wage employment through its Panchayat and Rural Development, Industries and Commerce, Agriculture, Horticulture and Plantation sectors during the 12th Plan period. Meanwhile, a report published by Union Ministry of Labour said, Assam has 33 per cent less unemployed people compared to the national average. Assam recorded six point four per cent unemployed while the all India figure has been placed at nine point five.
