The Supreme Court yesterday rejected a plea to make Hindi compulsory for students from Class 1 to 8. It refused to entertain a plea seeking a direction to the Centre, the states and union territories to make Hindi compulsory for students across the country to promote national unity.<br/><br/>The bench, comprising Chief Justice J.S. Khehar, Justices D Y Chandrachud and Sanjay Kishan Kaul, said the people speaking other languages may also start asking why their languages are not being taught. The bench added that the government could look into it.<br/><br/>The petitioner in his plea had said the three-language formula has still not been implemented.
