After hanging fire for 14 years, the prospect for the passage of the controversial women's reservation bill has further brightened with more support for the historic measure coming up today. Sharp divisions have come to the fore among one of the main the opponents of the measure JD(U) with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar declaring his support.Nitish Kumar said that women have become more enlightened and their contribution has increased. Therefore,he said, the time has come that they should get reservation in Parliament and Legislative assemblies.JDU leader Sharad Yadav claimed that their party is demanding quota within quota and there is no conflict within the party.JD-U has seven MPs in Rajya Sabha and 20 in the Lok Sabha.Nationalist Congress Party says it will extend its full support to Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament. Stating this party's National General Secretary and MP Tariq Anwar said at Katihar today that the demand for sub-quota in the bill for other backward community was not justified as there was no provision for reservation for this class in legislature in the constitution.DMK, National Conferene and Akali Dal, together accounting for nine MPs in Rajya Sabha, also today pledged their backing to the Constitution amendment bill. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President Karunanidhi said issues of sub-quota, raised by opponents of the legislation, could be sorted out later. He said, first 33 per cent reservation for women should be ensured and then a phased implementation of reservation within reservation for women from Muslim community, Scheduled cast, scheduled Tribes can be taken up.As it is a Constitution amendment bill, its passage requires a special majority of two-third backing of at least 155 members in a House 245 with an effective strength of 233.The government has the clear support of 138 members of Congress, BJP and Left parties besides that of a number of small parties, which takes the backing to more than 165.AIR correspondent says that with the split in the JD(U) and AJIT Singh RLD too joining the forces in favour of the Bill , parties like RJD and SP are getting isolated. The historic Bill will be taken up for consideration and passage on Monday , the 100th year of the International Women's Day.
