Support for the historic Women's Reservation Bill is gaining momentum with political parties and other organisations favouring passage of the Bill in Parliament. The Bill is to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha tomorrow, coinciding with the 100th International Women's Day. <br/><br/>Sharp division within the Janata Dal(U) has come to the fore with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar declaring his support for the Bill. The party chief Sharad Yadav is demanding a quota within the quota for supporting the Bill. JDU has seven MPs in the Rajya Sabha.<br/><br/>Nationalist Congress Party says, it will extend its full support to Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament. Party's National General Secretary Tariq Anwar said yesterday at Katihar that the demand for sub-quota in the bill for other backward classes was not justified as there was no provision in the Constitution for reservation.<br/><br/>DMK, National Conference and Akali Dal, together accounting for nine MPs in Rajya Sabha, also pledged their backing to the Constitution amendment Bill. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President Karunanidhi said, issues of sub-quota, raised by opponents of the legislation, could be sorted out later.<br/><br/>RJD's Laloo Prasad and SP's Mulayam Singh Yadav, the known opponents of the Bill in its present form have warned of uproar in Parliament if Government goes ahead with the measure. Congress President Sonia Gandhi has said that empowerment of women is the dream of late Rajiv Gandhi.<br/><br/>Leader of the Oppostion in the Lok Sabha Sushama Swaraj said that her party has always supported the Bill.<br/><br/>National Commission for Women has appealed political parties like SP and RJD to support the Bill when it is taken up in Parliament. <br/><br/>Representatives from various women organisations have said that March 8 will be a red letter day for women in the country. <br/><br/>As it is a Constitution amendment Bill, its passage requires a special majority of two-third backing of at least 155 members in a House of 245 with an effective strength of 233. The government has the clear support of 138 members of Congress, BJP and Left parties besides that of a number of small parties, which takes the backing to more than 165, one more than the required number.<br/><br/> AIR correspondent says that with the split in the JD(U) and Ajit Singh's RLD too joining the forces in favour of the Bill , parties like RJD and SP are getting isolated.
