Summit level talks between PM and Sarkozy today; Nuclear cooperation, terrorism high on agenda

India and France are likely to sign a number of agreements following the summit level talks between Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and the visiting French President Nicolas Sarkozy in New Delhi today. The two countries are expected to ink deals in the areas of Civil Nuclear Cooperation, Space and trade and investment among others.Besides Civil Nuclear Cooperation, India's bid for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council and reforms in the international financial architecture are likely to figure prominently during the talks between the two leaders. The growing threat of terrorism orginating from Afghanistan and Pakistan and its impact on international peace and security are also expected to be discussed by them.AIR correspondent reports enhancing partnership in defence, education, research, healthcare, agriculture, climate change and sustainable development will also be high on their agenda.Sarkozy set the tone for the delegation level talks on the first day of his four-day visit to India in Bangalore. He reiterated France's support for India's candidacy for an expanded United Nations Security Council and New Delhi's bid to join the top nuclear clubs including the Nuclear Suppliers Group. The issues at G-20 like reforms in the international financial institutions and nuclear non proliferation are also expected to be flagged off prominently during the summit-level talks. Realising the full potential of economic engagement with a level playing field and strengthening people to people contacts is essential to put the relationship on a higher pedestal. Vijay Raina, AIR News Delhi.The Prime Minister last night hosted a private dinner for the French President and his wife Carla Bruni at his official residence in New Delhi. UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao and NationalSecurity Adviser Shivshankar Menon were among those who attended the dinner. Mr Sarkozy arrived in New Delhi last evening from Agra where he visited Taj Mahal and hostorical monuments at Fatehpur Sikri.During his stay in National Capital Mr. Sarkozy will call on the President, Mrs. Patibha Devisingh Patil at Rashtpati Bhawan and will also exchange views with UPA Chiarperson Sonia Gandhi. He will also attend a reception by the French Community in Delhi.The French President will leave for Mumbai tomorrow to pay homage to the victims of 2008 terror attacks and confer french honours to senior executives of Oberoi and Taj Hotels for their extra ordinary services during the attack. Before leaving for home on same evening from Mumbai, Mr. Sarkozy will also deliver the valedictory address at the Indo French business meet which is expected to be attended over 300 business leaders from the two countries.
