Summit level talks between Indian PM & EU President underway at Brussels

The Summit level talks between Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the European Union President Harman Van Rompuy begin in the Belgian capital Brussels this afternoon. India and the EU which consists of 27 countries are now at a crucial stage of negotiations for a free trade agreement.The Broad Based Trade and Investment Agreement, strategic cooperation, counter-terrorism issues are also high on the agenda in the summit level meeting.AIR Special correspondent S. Mathias covering the Prime Ministers visit reports that, the two leaders will also discuss Non-traditional threats to security, situation in Afghanistan, and climate change.Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said in Brussels that a roadmap for negotiations on the free trade agreement has been finalized and mutually agreed upon.Talking exclusively to All India Radio News in, Brussels the Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar said the deal will benefit both the parties.Mr. Khullar urged the media not to speculate on the outcome of the pact and wait till the agreement is signed.Official sources said that India’s position on intellectual property rights will be respected in the pact. The issue of easy movement of Indian professionals in to the EU zone is also being taken care of. Dr. Manmohan Singh will later hold a bilateral meeting with the Belgian leadership to discuss the potential for diversification in trade and related aspects. The Indian Ambassador in Brussels Dr. J. Bhagwati told AIR News that Belgium is the third largest trade partner of India.Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is in Brussels on a two nation visit of Belgium and Germany.
