India lost 1-2 to defending champions New Zealand in their penultimate round robin match of the 25th Azlan Shah hockey tournament at Ipoh, Malaysia today. In the match, New Zealand took the early lead as Ken Russell in 28th minute found the net. Indians, made a comeback by a goal from Mandeep Singh in 36th minute. But Black Sticks striker Nick Wilson pounded the match-winner resulted from a defensive error committed by Indians, as they failed to clear the ball properly in their own striking circle in 41st minute.With a loss today, India's chance to directly advance into the Finals have been hampered. However, all is not lost as India can still play in the Gold medal match if they defeat hosts Malaysia in their last round robin game on Friday.Australia are already in the Finals and still on top of the standings with 15 points from 5 wins in as many games, followed by New Zealand on 11 points from 6 matches. While India have 9 points from 5 matches and a win on Friday will give them 3 points which will push them to 2nd spot in the points table and ensure a place in the Finals.Meanwhile in today's other fixtures, Australia continued its domination as they registered 5th consecutive victory in as many matches. The World Champions defeated Japan 3-1 in their penultimate round robin match. In the last encounter for the day, hosts Malaysia in their 5th round robin match beat Pakistan 1-Nil.
