India have won its opening encounter against Japan 2-1 in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2016 played at Ipoh in Malaysia today. With a young squad in hand, India came from a goal behind to register victory.Initially Japan took the early lead, as in the second quarter Kenji scored to make the scoreline 1-0. It was, however, short lived as Harmanpreet Singh sounded board to make it 1-1 before half time. Heading in the third quarter India took lead from Captain Saradar Singh's goal in the 31st minute, to make the score line 2-1 and maintained that lead till the end. When the final whistle blew India had made few more shy attempts at the goal post but couldn't convert them.Now, India plays World Champions Australia in their next fixture tomorrow. This is the 25th edition of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and has India, Pakistan, Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Canada and Japan battling it out for the prestigious title. The event will serve as a barometer to measure the team's preparation for the Rio Olympics in August.India, Canada, New Zealand and Australia have already qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics and they will use this tournament as practice ahead of the mega event. India has had a good run in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup winning the annual event five times in 1985, 1991, 1995, 2009 and 2010, earning bronze on six occasions and finishing runners-up once in 2008.
