In Afghanistan, suicide bombers attacked several places in Southern Uruzgan province this afternoon killing at least 19 people and injuring 37. Official sources say the suicide bombers simultaneously targeted government buildings in Tirinkot, capital city of the province. A blast also occurred at National Radio Television branch in the province. Afghan police have surrounded the area and the clashes continued for about three hours. Eyewitness said they heard two explosions near the governor's office, followed by heavy fighting between Afghan forces and insurgents, including suicide bombers. Later on NATO troops were called in to help the Afghan security forces. Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.Insurgents have stepped up their attacks on government sites since foreign troops have handed over responsibilities to Afghan security forces under the first phase of security transition. On Wednesday morning Kandahar mayor, Ghulam Haidar Hamidi was killed in a suicide attack in his office, the second high-profile assassination in the province. Two weeks ago President Karzai's half brother, Ahmad Wali Karzai, the head of provincial council, was killed in his house in Kandahar city by one of his bodyguards.
