In Afghanistan, the Mayor of Kandahar was killed in a suicide bomb blast on Wednesday. A statement issued by the Kandahar Governor's office, said the Mayor, Ghulam Haider Hamidi, 65, died in the Municipal office along with a civilian and the suicide bomber. The attacker detonated explosives hidden in his turban while the Mayor was speaking to some persons about the demolition of their illegally built homes. This is the second high-profile assassination in the province in one month. Two weeks ago, President Karzai's half brother, Ahmad Wali Karzai and the head of the Provincial Council, was killed in his house by one of his own bodyguards. According to the agency reports, Taliban has claimed responsibility for the assassination. Earlier this month, Ahmad Wali Karzai, the head of Kandhar Povincial Council and half-brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, was killed by one of his security guards in his home. The latest killing comes after the completion of first phase of security transitions in Afghanistan. So far the responsibility of seven places has been transferred from foreign troops to Afghan security forces. As announced by President Karzai the security transition process will complete by the end of 2014 with the departure of all foreign troops from Afghan soil. Although Afghan government has expressed confidence that its security forces are capable of defending their country, but the killing of high profile persons one after another, raises doubts on their ability. Some critics also say the security transition process is premature, because Afghan forces are not fully prepared to shoulder the responsibility. Afghanistan President Karzai has strongly condemned the assassination of Ghulam Haider Hamidi.
