In Afghanistan, at least 10 people have been killed in a suicide bomb attack in high security Intercontinental Hotel late last night. According to reports, six heavily armed insurgents entered the hotel as guests were having dinner. Three of them were suicide bombers and they blew themselves up inside the hotel. The remaining insurgents went to the rooftop and started firing indiscriminately with heavy arms. Afghan security forces fought a pitched battle before calling International Security Assistance Force. In the five hour operation, all the insurgents were killed. There was a huge fire in the hotel after the attack which was later put off. It is not clear how gunmen entered the high security hotel as normally there are rigorous security procedures. The hotel was hosting an Afghan security meeting at the time. The attack comes nearly a week after President Barack Obama announced his plan to withdraw 33,000 US troops from Afghanistan. Just a day before, officials from the US, Pakistan and Afghanistan met in Kabul to discuss prospects for making peace with Taliban insurgents to end the nearly decade-long war. The incident shows that the process of security transition in Afghanistan is not going to be easy and peaceful.
