Government on Tuesday said that sugar prices will remain stable for coming months on the back of bumper production. Food and Public Distribution Minister K V Thomas on Tuesday said that over 24 million tonnes of sugar was produced this year which is much more than the country's consumption. He added government will ensure that sugar factories make fair realization and pay remunerative cane price to the farmers without hiking prices for the common man.Mr. Thomas made it clear that Centre is taking certain long term policy measures with a view to reduce fluctuations in production of sugar. He added that government is taking stringent measures to forbid black marketing of sugar. The Minister elaborated that government allowed the sugar factories to export, to ensure that the higher production does not lead to mounting cane price arrears and sugar prices remain stable.Mr. Thomas said that according to the estimates the sugar production in the next season too, will be more than our needs. He reiterated government's commitment to supply sugar to poor sections of the society at concessional rate.
