Sudan has said that it will open a humanitarian corridor for delivering food aid to thousands of people suffering from famine in South Sudan, which split from the north in 2011.<br/><br/>South Sudan, the world's youngest nation, has declared famine in parts of Unity State, saying 100,000 people face starvation and another million are on the brink of famine. <br/><br/>Sudanese Humanitarian Commission said in a statement that the government of Sudan has agreed to open a humanitarian corridor for delivering aid to people affected by famine in Unity State and Bahr El Ghazal.<br/><br/>United Nations welcomed Sudan's decision to open the aid corridor, saying it showed Khartoum's "commitment" to the people of South Sudan. It also said that at least 7.5 million people across South Sudan — almost two thirds of the population, need humanitarian assistance.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, six aid workers were killed in an ambush in South Sudan, Eugene Owusu of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said yesterday.
