In Assam, today is the last day of submission of nomination papers for the second phase of Assembly polls scheduled to be held on 11th of the next month in 64 constituencies. Over 320 candidates have filed their nomination papers so far for this phase, at least 25 among them are women candidates. Scrutiny of nominations will be taken up on Saturday. The last day of withdrawal of nomination papers for this phase is on 28th of this month. Among others who filed nominations so far included former Chief Minister and leader of Opposition Prafulla Kumar Mahanta at Samaguri and Barhampur constituencies in Nagaon district. The Asom Gana Parishad President Chandra Mohan Patowary filed his nomination papers at Dharmapur constituency in Nalbari district. Several sitting ministers of the ruling Congress and MLAs also submitted their nominations for this phase. The campaigning for the first phase of elections is slowly picking up in almost all the 62 assembly segment going to polls on 4th of next month. The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhubaneshwar Kalita has addressed poll meeting in Dibrugarh on day. Asom Gana Parishad, AIUDF and Left Fronts are also likely to intensify their campaign soon. Altogether 485 candidates are in fray for the first phase of polls.
