Strong quake hits China, 300 killed, 8,000 injured

In China, at least 300 people have been killed and nearly 8000 injured in a strong earthquake that rocked the north-western remote Qinghai province today. <br/><br/>Chinese media said many houses have collapsed, roads have been damaged or blocked by landslides and telecommunications have been disrupted. <br/><br/>Many students are buried under the debris of a vocational school, which collapsed due to the quake. <br/><br/>The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake measured 6.9 on the Richter scale. <br/><br/>The China Earthquake Administration has, however, put the magnitude of the quake at 7.1. <br/><br/>Local officials said more than 85 percent of the houses have collapsed in the town of Jiegu, located near the quake's epicentre. <br/><br/>Rescue teams and equipment have been rushed to the affected area. <br/><br/>Chinese media reports said telecommunication link with the airport has been lost, and a road leading to the terminal has been damaged. <br/>
