Strong earthquake rocks northeast, 3 Indians die in Bhutan

A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale followed by an aftershock shook the North Eastern region of the country on Monday. Regional Seismological Centre in Guwahati said, the first tremor was felt at 2.24 pm and lasted for 40 seconds followed by another for seven seconds at 2.42 pm. The epicentre of the quake was at Mongar, 180 km east of Thimpu in Bhutan and 125 km Northwest of Guwahati.There was no report of casualty, though minor cracks were reported in high rise apartments and shopping complexes in Guwahati.The tremor affected the Lower Assam districts of Nalbari, Baksa, Kamrup and Kokrajhar bordering Bhutan and was also felt in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and North Bengal. This was the fifth quake to rock the region within a month.In Bhutan, at least 10 people, including three Indian labourers, were killed due to the earthquake. It also destroyed houses, monasteries and other buildings across the mountainous country.A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale also hit Bangladesh's capital Dhaka and the entire northern region, infusing panic among the people who were celebrating the festival of 'Eid ul Fitre'. However, no casualty was reported.
