A powerful earthquake of 7.7 magnitude hit Nicobar islands shortly after midnight at about 12.57 a.m. It has been epic entered 157 Kilometers West of Nicobar group of islands near Misha island. Its impact has been felt in many coastal areas including Chennai, Vizag and Kolkata. Our correspondent reports that after shocks still continue in the Nicobar region and another earthquake of 5.3 magnitude on the Richter scale shoot these islands at about 4.15 this morning. <br/> <br/>People in many parts of Nicobar islands felt strong tremors that lasted for about 10 seconds. The people at the southern most tip, Campbell bay were highly panicked by the repeated quakes, as the houses were shaken for few seconds continuously. Soon after the tremors, they got up from their beds and ran out of their houses. They stayed in high altitudes throughout the night and closely watched the sea level changes.<br/> <br/>The after shocks still continue in the region. Another quake of 5.3 magnitude rocked these islands this morning at about 4.15. <br/> <br/>Meanwhile, Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services at Hyderabad informed that no Tsunami activity has been observed in the Indian Ocean region despite surge in the sea level.<br/> <br/>According to US Geological Survey, the quake has occurred at the greater depth of 35 Kms in the mid sea. So far, there were no reports of casualties or damage to properties from any part of these islands.<br/>In Port Blair and many parts of Andaman islands mild tremors were felt. The people came out of their houses and stayed in open places for some time.<br/>
