Strong cold wave has engulfed Kashmir Valley

In Jammu & Kashmir, a strong cold wave has engulfed Kashmir Valley after intermittent rainfall in the plains and snowfall in several upper reaches . The weather system took a turn since yesterday evening as rainfall started throughout the Valley. Gulmarg, Shopian, Karnah and Gurez areas experienced snowfall plummeting temperature several degrees below normal. <br/><br/>Director Meteorological Department Sonam Lotus told AIR that light to moderate rainfall will occur for next two days and weather may improve from October 27 onwards. The weather system may also disrupt air transport. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that the plains of Kashmir including summer capital Srinagar is experiencing intermittent rainfall since yesterday afternoon. The vital Srinagar-Leh National Highway and Mughal Road in south Kashmir's Shopian linking Rajouri and other Jammu areas, have been blocked for vehicular traffic. The Srinagar Jammu National Highway has also been closed due to shooting stones and landslides in Ramban area in Jammu region. <br/><br/>The traffic authorities are clearing the stranded vehicles on the highway. The authorities have issued advisory to contact Traffic Control Units before proceeding for travel on national highways. In Srinagar and other areas, most of the residents preferred to remain indoors and pulled out woolens and electric gadgets to combat the winter-like weather system. The authorities have already alerted the men and machinery to meet any eventuality due to inclement weather.
