In Kerala, strike is being observed in the state today demanding a country-wide ban on Endosulfan pesticide. The dawn to dusk strike called by the Left Democratic Front, coincides with the conclusion of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in Geneva today. A decision on the demand for a world wide ban on Endosulfan is expected to be taken at the meet. The CPM-led LDF government in Kerala has been pressing for a nation-wide ban on the production and use of the pesticide. Endosulfan has made life miserable for several hundreds of villagers in Kasargod district, where aerial spraying of the pesticide has led to deaths and congenital deformities in cashew plantation areas.
