The Lok Sabha was informed today that two stretches along the river Cauvery and three along the Tungabhadra river have been found to be polluted.
The Central Pollution Control Board has come to this conclusion. It has monitored the water quality of various rivers in the country and identified 150 polluted stretches in various rivers.
Giving this information in the House today, Environment and Forests Minister Jayanthi Natarajan said, the National River Conservation Plan presently covers 41 rivers in 191 towns, spread over 20 states.
To conserve the rivers and maintain their water quality, sewage treatment plants and low-cost sanitation facilities have been created. River fronts have also been developed, the Minister said.
