Strengthening parliamentary institutions and role of presiding officers in their administration is the focus of discussions in the 20th conference of Speakers of the Commonwealth countries that began in New Delhi on Monday evening. Briefing reporters, the Lok Sabha Speaker Mrs Miera Kumar said that the standing committee of the conference will hold detailed discussions on the agenda of the conference. 50 Speakers and presiding officers of the legislatures will join the deliberations tomorrow after the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh inaugurates it. <br/><br/>A commemorative stamp will be released on the occasion. Speaker Mrs. Miera Kumar will throw open an exhibition showcasing the evolution of Indian democracy.<br/><br/>Giving details about the four day event Mrs Miera Kumar said that that three standing committees have been formulated to prepare issues to be taken up at the plenary. Fostering and encouragement of impartiality by the presiding officers , promotion of knowledge and understanding of parliamentary democracy will also hog the limelight. AIR correspondent reports that most of the speakers and presiding officers of the legislatures have reached Delhi to take part in the conference.
