Storage facilities across country required to check high food prices: NAFED MD

The Centre has taken several measures to increase agricultural productivity which is the only lasting solution to arrest food inflation. Talking on a phone-in programme of All India Radio, the Managing Director of the National Agriculture Marketing Federation of India Limited- NAFED, Sanjiv Chopra said that setting up of adequate storage facility like warehouses across the country is also required to check the sky-rocketing food prices.Regarding increase in onion prices, Mr. Chopra said that his organisation had floated a tender to import onion from Pakistan, Iran, China and Egypt and quotation in this regard will be opened on tuesday. Mr. Chopra also attributed the price hike of the kitchen staple to the heavy rain which affected harvesting. He exuded confidence that the price will come down within few days with the arrival of onions from other countries. Another participant in the programe, former Finance Secretary D.C. Gupta said that the Government will take stringent action against hoarders and black marketeers to ensure that food products reach the market in a timely manner which would facilitate moderation in price.
