Voice of Iraq news agency says, U.S. officials have clarified that there are still 56 thousand U.S. soldiers in Iraq. therefore the reduction to 50,000 non-combat troops by September 1 promised by President Barack Obama still has a some way to go.The clarification has come after media reports that last U.S. combat troops had left Iraq. The agency said that last U.S. brigade officially classed as a combat unit formally handed over responsibilities to its Iraqi counterparts on Aug. 7, but U.S. troops have been steadily flowing out of the country on transport aircraft and by road. Under the agreement between US and Iraq, US has to pull out its combat troops from Iraq by 31st august while it will completely withdraw its troops from Iraq by end of 2011.AIR correspondent reports, under the status of forces agreement signed between Iraq and United States on 17 November, 2008, US forces were scheduled to leave the country by the end of 2011 while its combat troops by the end of August 2010. After withdrawal of combat troops, remaining US forces in Iraq will act as advise-and-assist brigades, which consist mainly of training and providing logistical support. At the time when US forces leave Iraq, political uncertainty still prevails and security situation is fragile and most of the people will be waiting to see what happens in the country in the coming months and years.
