Stick to standards: Govt to manufacturers

The Government has asked manufacturers to adhere to the prescribed standards for achieving the confidence of consumers. Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution K.V Thomas said it was also necessary for the manufacturers to be in competition at the international level. Addressing the 20th meeting of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in New Delhi today, the Minister said with the advent of strong consumer movement in India, the consumers were becoming increasingly aware of their rights. He stressed the need of more transparency and accountability in the delivery of public services. Thomas said the Government had provided funds through several plans and schemes for the National System of Standardisation to enhance participation of experts representing techniques and scientific organisations. The Minister said it was necessary to have an effective voice in various international standardization fora. Lauding the BIS efforts, he said that it is already actively participating in such programmes.
