The Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says steps are being taken to introduce a multi-party political system in the country. He said his government is in no danger of falling despite five months of street protests. In an interview with state television, he defended his response to the protests, saying the solution in Syria was a political one but violence should be dealt with firmly by the security forces.
