Today is World Health Day. The day is being observed to mark the anniversary of founding of World health Organisation (WHO) in the year 1948. This year the theme of the Day is Ageing and Health: Good Health Adds Life to Years.
AIR correspondent reports that the focus of the day is to how a good health throughout life can help older men and women lead full and productive lives and be a resource for their families and communities.
On this occasion, the Centre has formulated a new policy which suggests setting up of a National Centre for the elderly suffering from dementia and other mental diseases.
Health Ministry Joint Secretary Sujaya Krishna said this was a Government initiative in keeping with the growing population of the elderly.
AIR correspondent reports the new policy would take care of the need for dedicated health care facilities to the elderly. Geriatric units at even the primary health centres would be set up in 100 districts in 21 states.
Meanwhile, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has said the State government had taken many initiatives for providing better healthcare to the elderly people.
In a message on the occasion of World Health Day in Chandigarh today, he said the National Programme for the Health Care for Elderly (NPHCE) has been implemented in four districts of the State, namely Mewat, Ambala, Kurukshetra and Yamuna Nagar.
Hooda said the programme provided an easy access to promotional, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services to the elderly through community based healthcare approach.
The CM said the focus should be on how good health throughout the life could help older people to lead full and productive lives and be a resource for their families and communities.
