State-of-the-Art Met Forecasting System unveiled

A state-of-the-art Integrated Forecasting and Communication System to provide more accurate weather data was unveiled at the India Meteorology Department. Inaugurating the system , Minister of State for Earth Sciences Prithviraj Chavan said that dynamic weather prediction models using super computers and highly sophisticated software will give accurate data. He added that agriculture, like many other sectors of Indian economy, is highly dependent on weather and climate. Mr Chavan emphasised on the need for a specialized Public Weather System as IMD caters to the growing demand from sectors like tourism, power, adventure and sport apart from providing services to the traditional sectors including agriculture, aviation, shipping etc. He said that the new system will help the Met department to automatically design, generate and disseminate tailor-made weather services in the country.
