The latest census report of Nagaland has indicated an increase in the number of towns and level of urbanization. Sex ratio improved largely in urban areas and literacy rate has jumped particularly among women. The Rural Urban distribution of provisional population totals of census 2011, which was released today, pointed out that towns in Nagaland have increased to 26 as against nine in 2001. According to the data, the rural population constitute about 71 percent of the total population while urban constitute about 29 percent. The data also showed an increase of villages, including un-recognized and un-inhabited, by one hundred and eleven villages. The census data also recorded an improvement in female literacy in both urban and rural areas by over 15 percent. The gender gap in literacy has come down from 10.06 in 2001 to 7.48 percent in 2011 in rural areas and in urban areas from 6.02 percent in 2001 to 4.01 percent in 2011. Addressing the function, Minister of urban development and higher technical education, Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu said, the latest census data is extremely crucial and will help in formulating the blue print for future development of the State. He said, with the increase in the pace of development, urban centers have also increased in the state.ontent
