State Bank of India welcomes government's Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana

State Bank of India has welcomed the government's UDAY or Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana stating that the move will go a long way in bringing financial discipline in power sector. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, SBI Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya said the package would bring in a lasting solution to the problems faced by state electricity boards. She said, the scheme is likely to revive the near bankrupt state electricity boards. While SBI has an overall outstanding debt of around 16,000 crore rupees, the banking sector as a whole has a huge exposure of 4.3 trillion rupees in principal alone towards troubled state discoms. A couple of days ago, Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal had announced a massive bailout plan to revive the almost bankrupt state electricity distributors.
