Stalemate over J & K govt. formation continues

In Jammu and Kashmir, the stalemate over the Jammu and Kashmir government formation continued and no significant move has been so far made either by PDP or BJP in this regard. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today intensified intra-party consultations over possible alliances for government formation ahead of discussions with Governor N N Vohra likely this week.

PDP Chief Spokesman Naeem Akhtar told PTI that all options, including an alliance with BJP, were open for PDP. But there were reports it was facing stiff opposition from a substantial chunk of its MLAs to any tie up with BJP. PDP has emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats in the just-concluded election to the 87-member Assembly in the state, followed by BJP with 25 seats.

The BJP state President Jugal Kishore Shamra told AIR that the party is making all out efforts so that a stable government is formed in the state. There was speculation in political circles that if BJP was not able to reach an agreement with PDP, it may present to the Governor a list of 30 MLAs to show that it had two more than PDP, raising the remote possibility of it being invited first to take a shot at ministry formation.

Governor had on Friday sent separate letters to PDP and BJP, for discussions over government formation before January one.
