Proceedings in both the Houses of Parliament were stalled for the third day today on the issue of CAG report on coal block allocation. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha witnessed repeated disruptions before being adjourned finally for the day.
Both houses witnessed uproarious scenes as the BJP-led opposition, demanded resignation of the Prime Minister. The proceedings were stalled even after Rajya sabha Chairman Md. Hamid Ansari met leaders of political parties in his Chamber to resolve the stalemate between the opposition and the government. The Lok Sabha was initially adjourned till noon and later till 2 P.M. while the Rajya Sabha witnessed four repeated adjournments.
In the Lok Sabha, the BJP members supported by AIADMK and TDP rushed into the well shouting slogans. As the din continued, Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the House till 12 noon. Similar scenes prevailed when the House reassembled at 2 pm and the House was finally adjourned for the day. Except for the laying of papers on the table both the houses could not transact any business.
The Rajya Sabha also witnessed uproarious scenes on the same issue. It was first adjourned till noon, then for another half an hour, then till 2 p.m and finally for the day.
Govt-Reax
The government today said it was prepared to discuss threadbare the CAG report on coal block allocation in Parliament and reply to the issues raised by the opposition. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Home Minister Shushilkumar Shinde said the government is already prepared to discuss anything they want. Law Minister Salman Khurshid expressed hope that the opposition will join in ensuring proper functioning of Parliament.
The Congress today hoped better sense will prevail over the BJP and it will play the role of a responsible opposition in Parliament. Congress General Secretary Janardhan Diwedi accused that the BJP has vitiated the atmosphere of democracy by stalling parliament. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr. Diwedi said the BJP is stalling parliament and not allowing a debate on coal block allocation.
The CPI(M) today demanded a probe into the alleged corruption in the coal block allocations and to fix the responsibility.In a Polit Bureau statement, the party asked that the allocations made to the private companies should be cancelled and steps taken to recover the losses suffered by the government. The party has also called upon all its Party units to conduct a campaign to mobilise the people against the corruption.
CPI(M) today said it will decide its strategy on the coal block allocation issue on the basis of a statement Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may make in Parliament on the matter. Addressing the media in New Delhi CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said the Prime Minister should clarify on the issue.
