Stalemate in Parliament continues for third consecutive day

The standoff between the main opposition and the government in Parliament on CAG's report on Coal block allocation continued on the third day today. While the opposition BJP is pressing for resignation of Prime Minister in view of the heavy loss to the exchequer, the ruling combine has rejected the demand and made it clear the government is ready to discuss the report. Our Parliamentary Correspondent reports that as soon as the two houses met today, opposition members joined by AIADMK and TDP trooped into the well of the two houses to press their demand forcing the presiding officers to adjourn them. Similar scenes prevailed when the two Houses met after each adjournment. This led to adjournment of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha for the day. The Rajya Sabha Chairman, Mohd. Hamid Ansari convened a meeting of floor leaders to end the deadlock but the meeting remained inconclusive. Home Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde met the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha to end the logjam. He later told reporters that the House may function normally from Monday. Mr. Shinde said the Government is prepared to hold a discussion on the issue.

The Law Minister, Mr. Salman Khurshid also expressed the hope that the opposition will join in ensuring proper functioning of Parliament.

Trinamool Congress Chief and West Bengal Chief Minister, Ms. Mamta Banerjee suggested to convene an all party meeting to resolve the present impasse. She told reporters in New Delhi that opposition needs to be taken into confidence to end the stalemate.

CPI(M) demanded a full probe into the alleged corruption in coal block allocation and fix responsibility. Party leader, Mr. Sitaram Yechuri said in New Delhi that the party will decide its future course of action on the issue on the basis of a statement, the Prime Minister may make on the matter.

The ruling Congress hoped that better sense will prevail over BJP and it will play the role of a responsible opposition. Congress General Secretary, Mr. Janardhan Dwivedi accused the BJP of vitiating the atmosphere of Parliament by stalling the functioning of the two Houses.

BJP stuck to its demand of Prime Minister's resignation. Party leader, Yashwant Sinha charged Congress members of using foul language in JPC meeting yesterday. This he said led to walkout by the BJP members. Mr. Sinha demanded that Prime Minister and Finance Minister should depose before the Joint Parliamentary Committee on 2G spectrum allocation.
